Sharon Sutherland began drawing
on the streets of NDG, solving problems of three point perspective
in between suburban car traffic. Not having the confidence to
pursue a life in the theatre, she went into teaching elementary
school, and after working at a creative arts elementary school
(FACE) decided to concentrate solely on her artistic career.
This led to positions as a part-time professor of the arts at
McGill and Concordia Universities and stints at the Montreal
Museum of Fine Arts and several private art schools. Courses
at the Ontario College of Art and the Nova Scotia College of
Art strengthened her graphic skills and when the chance to teach
for McGill on Baffin Island presented itself she jumped at it.
After 20 solo and group shows Sharon began to investigate the
possibility of a graphic design business to augment her art
sales. This Arctic Rose Gallery proved so popular that M. Sutherland
participated in the only International conference on the creation
of Nunavut at Duke University in North Carolina. Sharon continues
to seek out new marketing activities and adapt her inventory
to the ideas and suggestions of her clientel. She lives in Montreal
Quebec but her heart still dreams of moon-lit nights on the
tundra.
